A combination of our 10 Day Kingdom Of Wonder and our 10 Day Lazy Laos adventures, the 20 Day Far Out Indochina offers up some of the best destinations SE Asia has to offer. This journey takes you through 3 countries (Thailand, Laos & Cambodia), highlighting some of the top backpacking destinations along the way.
Our trip starts and ends in Bangkok, Thailand where world class shopping, dining and legendary nightlife are just a few of the things that make this capital city arguably the most fun in Asia. Next, we head to Cambodia where loads of incredible culture and history await. First, we visit the capital city of Phnom Penh, a city that has a lot to offer the curious traveller but is perhaps most well known to the backpacking scene for it’s sobering modern history. For our next stop in Cambodia we head to Siem Reap, where we explore ancient temples that stun the eyes and boggle the mind. We cap off this SE Asian odyssey with a stop in the sleepy and stunningly beautiful country of Laos. You can sum up Laos in one word, awesome! Loaded with charm, Instagram worthy scenery, and awesome adventure activities, Laos is a nature lover and culture seeker’s dreamland.
They say variety is the spice of life, and the 20 Day Far Out Indochina has no shortage of variety, or spice for that matter. Oozing with culture, nature and incredible activities, this Far Out Adventure is one not to be missed. Click a destination below for more information.
You arrive in Bangkok late the first evening. The group meets for welcome drinks and a short information session at our guesthouse. Day 2 is when the action starts as we embark on our first included activity, a day trip to former capital of Ayutthaya where you’ll see some of the most impressive Buddhist temples in all of Thailand.
From Bangkok you will fly into the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh. We are picked up at the airport by a fleet of private tuk-tuks that take us for a ride through the wild and crazy Phnom Penh traffic to our accommodations. Our first night in town we have our official Far Out welcome dinner, and party it up at our amazing guesthouse. Day 4 we embark on our first group activity in Cambodia, a sobering day trip to Tuol Sleng Prison and the Choeung Ek Killing Fields. The last day in town is yours for exploring. You can visit the National Museum, the Royal Palace, take a Khmer cooking class, visit the Russian market and much more in this exciting capital city.
From Phnom Penh we will be taking a private minibus north to Seam Reap. Our first day is yours to get acquainted, but in the evening the group usually gets together and heads to the Angkor Night Market and Pub Street for some fun. Day 7 is our group activity, an absolutely incredible day exploring the ancient temples of Angkor Wat National Park. Days 8 & 9 are free time and the activities available to you are pretty awesome. Hike Phnom Kulen mountain, visiting ancient temples and fantastic waterfalls. Take a trip to one of the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake and stick around for an evening “cultural” booze cruise. Hop on an ATV and cruise the countryside, or catch the sunset in a hot air balloon. Siem Reap is a backpacker’s dreamland, teeming with must do activities.
The morning of Day 10 we board a plane and head back to Thailand. Once in Bangkok you can visit Wat Po, haggle for goodies at the floating market or witness the locals go crazy at one of the top notch Muay Thai stadiums. If you feel like getting away from the big city, take a day trip to Kanchanaburi to visit the beautiful waterfalls. The evening of day 12 we take a private bus to the train station where we board the overnight train to Laos, something our guests always seem to really enjoy.
Our train arrives early in the morning Day 13 in Nong Khai, Thailand. After crossing the “friendship bridge” into Laos and getting our visas, we hop into a private mini bus for the ride north to Vang Vieng. After a long trip from Thailand, the group gets together for a delicious traditional Laos meal at our guesthouse, before heading out for a night on the town. Day 14 the group hits up the Nam Song river for a day of lazy river tubing, while taking in the mind-blowing views of the surrounding cliffs, and stopping in at the awesome bars that dot the. Days 15 and 16 are yours to check out the amazing caves, lagoons, temples, kayaking, mountain biking, etc. Vang Vieng is a beautiful place with endless opportunities for adventure.
The morning of day 17 we board our private minibus and make our way further north for the incredibly scenic ride to our final stop in Laos, Luang Prabang. After we arrive at our guesthouse we get the group acquainted with a walk to the downtown/riverside area. Here you can enjoy an authentic Laos dinner and watch the incredible sunset on the banks of the mighty Mekong, go for a sunset “booze” cruise, or visit the night market (one of our favorites in Asia) to stock up on mementos and souvenirs. Day 18 the group heads to Kuang Si waterfalls for an unbelievably fun day hiking through the lush green rain forest to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in SE Asia. For the final day in Laos you can spend your morning at the alms ceremony at dawn watching lines of Buddhist monks in their orange robes, collecting their food for the day. In the afternoon visit some of the many golden roofed temples, take a river tour to some of the many caves in the area, or visit some more world class waterfalls.
Rather than taking the overnight train back to Bangkok, we cut the travel time short and board a plane from Luang Prabang back to Thailand for the final night of our Far Out Adventure. Our hosts in Bangkok have a special send off celebration planned for us. Say goodbye to the amazing new friends you’ve made over the past 10 days, and prepare yourself for your onward journey home. Or perhaps, like many of our guests, you’ll be having so much fun you’ll want to join us for another 10 or 20 days on the next part of our circuit in the Philippines!!
